The Three-Row Leader: Atlas at 2,735 L
The Atlas is the largest vehicle in the 2026 Volkswagen range and it tops the cargo ranking by a wide margin. With the second and third rows folded, it opens up 2,735 L of space. That is enough for a bulk shopping run for a large household or camping gear for seven.
Behind the cargo capacity is a 2.0 L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 269 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, an 8-speed automatic with Tiptronic, and standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive. An available power tailgate with Easy Open and Easy Close makes loading with full hands simple. The 2026 lineup includes the Comfortline 4MOTION, Peak Edition 4MOTION, Highline 4MOTION and Execline 4MOTION, and with the towing package the Atlas is rated to pull 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg).

Two-Row SUVs: Atlas Cross Sport, Tiguan and Taos
The Atlas Cross Sport takes second place with 2,197 L. It shares the Atlas engine and 8-speed automatic but trades the third row for a sloped roofline and a two-row cabin. Buyers get the same 269 hp and 273 lb-ft and the same 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg) towing rating with the towing package, in a shorter body.
The Tiguan lands third at 2,081 L with the seats folded, and it still holds 1,668 L with the rear seats up. Every 2026 Tiguan comes with 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Most trims use a 201 hp, 221 lb-ft 2.0 L turbo, while the Highline Turbo R-Line raises output to 268 hp and 258 lb-ft. Comfortline trims and above add a power tailgate and a cargo cover.
The Taos rounds out the SUVs at 1,866 L. It runs a 1.5 L turbocharged 4-cylinder with 174 hp and 184 lb-ft, and it is offered in front-wheel drive on the Trendline or with 4MOTION all-wheel drive on every other trim. Combined fuel consumption is 7.4 L/100 km for front-wheel drive and 8.4 L/100 km for 4MOTION, the lowest of any Volkswagen SUV.

Hatchbacks: Golf GTI and Golf R at 977 L
The Golf GTI and Golf R share a body, and they share a cargo figure: 977 L with the rear seats folded. For a hatchback under 4.3 metres long, that is a practical amount of space, and the tall opening makes bulky boxes easier to load than a sedan trunk allows.
Under the hood they differ. The GTI uses a 2.0 L turbocharged 4-cylinder with 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque and a combined fuel consumption rating of 8.8 L/100 km. The Golf R pushes the same displacement to 328 hp and 295 lb-ft, rated at 9.3 L/100 km combined. Both suit drivers who want cargo flexibility without giving up a quick car.
Sedans: Jetta and Jetta GLI at 399 L
The Jetta and Jetta GLI close out the ranking with a 399 L trunk. That figure is measured with the rear seats in place, so it is a true trunk number rather than a folded maximum, and it handles a set of golf clubs, a couple of suitcases, or a week of groceries.
The standard Jetta uses a 1.5 L turbocharged 4-cylinder with 158 hp and 184 lb-ft, paired with an 8-speed automatic and a combined rating of 7.2 L/100 km, the most efficient figure in this ranking. The Jetta GLI upgrades to a 2.0 L turbo with 228 hp and 258 lb-ft and offers a choice of manual transmission or DSG, rated at 8.1 and 8.2 L/100 km combined.

Large families and frequent haulers: the Atlas at 2,735 L is the clear answer, with seven seats and a 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg) towing rating on top.
