The fully redesigned 2027 Volkswagen Atlas is on its way to St. James Volkswagen, with Canadian arrival scheduled for later this fall. Volkswagen Canada lifted the cover on the second-generation Atlas in New York on March 31, 2026, ahead of the city's annual auto show. For families across Winnipeg, the headline news is that the Atlas keeps everything that made it a practical three-row choice -- generous third-row room, real cargo space, standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive -- while adding sharper styling, an updated turbocharged engine, and a much longer list of standard features. Standard equipment now includes a power liftgate, dual Qi2 wireless charging, rear sunshades, and front and rear Park Distance Control on every trim. Volkswagen Canada has confirmed that final Canadian specifications and pricing will be announced ahead of the launch.
The 2027 Atlas adopts a more deliberate and premium face, with double-stacked LED headlights, a masked upper grille, and a strong hood line giving the SUV a planted appearance. Every trim except the base receives double lightlines and an illuminated VW badge, helping it stand out at any time of day. Standard dynamic turn signals offer three different animation patterns -- a small touch Winnipeg drivers will see every time they signal through a Portage Avenue turn or merge onto the Perimeter Highway.
The side profile shows redesigned proportions thanks to a sharper character line, sculpted side sills, and prominent fenders. Wheel sizes range from 18 inches up to 21 inches, with both machined alloy and gloss black finishes available. Around back, the spoiler is more pronounced, and the tailgate now sits flush with the bumper for a cleaner shape. A cross-body taillight signature ties the rear end to the front lighting design. Available illuminated door handles and puddle lamps with a unique projection pattern add a quietly upscale feel. Three new exterior colours -- Blackberry, Boreal Green, and Ascot Grey -- broaden the palette this year.
The cabin has been completely rebuilt around a wraparound architectural loop that flows through the dashboard and front door panels. Every vent, screen, and lighting element follows that one continuous line, giving the interior an organized and modern look. The shift lever has moved up to the steering column, opening up the centre console for storage, two-phone wireless charging, and the new Driver Experience Dial. Real wood décor is included on every Atlas trim, joined by soft-touch surfaces, contrasting stitching, and three available palettes: airy Mistral, classic Soul Black, or the all-new Garnet Red.
Comfort gains run throughout the cabin. The standard 12-way ergonomic driver's seat has been revised with stronger four-way lumbar support. Upper trims add thigh support, and four-way massage is available on both front seats. Captain's chairs and a panoramic sunroof remain available on the top two trims. The third row keeps its easy-access function -- second-row seats tilt and slide forward even with LATCH child seats secured -- which makes loading kids and gear less of a hassle on weekend trips out to Birds Hill or down to the lake. New B-pillar vents help direct conditioned air to second-row passengers, and second-row seat ventilation is offered on upper trims for warm prairie summers.
Power comes from the new EA888 evo5 turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder, rated at 282 horsepower. That figure is up 13 hp over the outgoing engine and is the highest output ever fitted to a production Atlas. Volkswagen anticipates better fuel economy than the previous generation, with official L/100 km figures to be released ahead of the launch. Towing capacity stays at 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg), and payload capacity is unchanged from the outgoing Atlas.
An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard, and Volkswagen's 4MOTION all-wheel drive is included on every trim. That standard 4MOTION matters in Winnipeg, where icy commutes, blowing snow on the Perimeter, and slick spring melts are part of the calendar. The redesigned Atlas rides on the upgraded MQB evo platform, which preserves the model's third-row room while supporting the new powertrain. Overall length is slightly increased over the current Atlas, while height, width, and wheelbase remain the same.
A free-standing infotainment screen anchors the dashboard. The base trim uses a 12.9-inch display, while every other trim moves up to a 15-inch screen. The 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro configurable instrument cluster is standard across the lineup. A new Driver Experience Dial sits in the centre console, controlling audio volume, drive modes, and -- on upper trims -- the Atmospheres feature that synchronizes lighting and audio. The console fits two phones charging side by side using updated Qi2 wireless pads, with up to seven USB-C ports placed throughout the cabin. The base trim adds a 9-speaker audio system, and the top two trims offer an available 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium setup.
Safety has expanded with the addition of a front centre airbag, raising total airbag count to seven. The IQ.DRIVE driver assistance suite has been refined as well. Travel Assist now allows for driver-initiated lane changes between 0 and 150 km/h while the driver keeps hands on the wheel. Front and rear Park Distance Control is now standard on every trim, including the base. The latest Park Assist Plus is added to the top trim, helpful when slotting into tight stalls at Polo Park or downtown Winnipeg parkades.
The 2027 Atlas continues with multiple Canadian trims, all sharing the EA888 evo5 turbocharged engine, eight-speed automatic transmission, and standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive.
