The Efficiency Leader: 2026 Volkswagen Jetta
The Jetta takes the top spot with a combined rating of 7.2 L/100 km. Its highway figure of 5.9 L/100 km is the lowest of any 2026 Volkswagen, which makes it a strong pick for anyone who logs long stretches at cruising speed. Power comes from a 1.5 L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 158 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Low consumption does not mean a stripped-down car. Every Jetta comes with the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit, heated front seats, and a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel. Trunk space measures 399 L, enough for a week of groceries or a couple of hockey bags.
The Jetta GLI keeps the same body but swaps in a 2.0 L 4-cylinder turbo rated at 228 hp and 258 lb-ft. Its 8.1 L/100 km combined rating is still better than every SUV in the lineup, and you can choose a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG automatic.
The Most Efficient SUV: 2026 Volkswagen Taos
The Taos is the answer for drivers who want SUV cargo room without the SUV fuel bill. In front-wheel-drive form it is rated at 7.4 L/100 km combined, only 0.2 L/100 km behind the Jetta. That rating comes from a 1.5 L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 174 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, matched to an 8-speed automatic.
Adding 4MOTION all-wheel drive raises the combined rating to 8.4 L/100 km. That is a one-litre difference, and for many drivers the extra traction on snow and ice is worth it. Both versions offer up to 1,866 L of cargo space with the rear seats folded.

The Tiguan sits in the middle of the lineup at 9.2 L/100 km combined, with a highway rating of 7.6 L/100 km. Every 2026 Tiguan sold in Canada comes with 4MOTION all-wheel drive as standard, so that rating already includes the traction advantage.
The base engine is a 2.0 L 4-cylinder turbo rated at 201 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque with an 8-speed automatic. The Highline Turbo R-Line trim uses a higher-output version of the same engine, producing 268 hp and 258 lb-ft, and still runs on regular gasoline. The third-generation Tiguan also weighs up to about 77 kg (170 lb) less than the previous model, which helps both fuel economy and acceleration.
The Performance Picks: 2026 Golf GTI and Golf R
Hot hatchbacks are not usually shopped on fuel economy, yet the Golf GTI holds its own at 8.8 L/100 km combined. Its 2.0 L 4-cylinder turbo makes 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque through a 7-speed DSG transmission, and it runs on regular fuel.
The Golf R steps up to 328 hp and 295 lb-ft with standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive, rated at 9.3 L/100 km combined. It is the only 2026 Volkswagen rated on premium gasoline, which is why its estimated annual fuel cost is higher than the Atlas despite better consumption figures.
The Family Haulers: 2026 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport
Three-row SUVs carry more people and more gear, and their ratings reflect that. The Atlas Cross Sport and the Atlas Comfortline are both rated at 10.7 L/100 km combined. Highline and Execline trims come in at 11.0 L/100 km, and the Peak Edition at 11.1 L/100 km. All use a 2.0 L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 269 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque with an 8-speed automatic and 4MOTION all-wheel drive.
The Atlas Cross Sport offers 2,197 L of cargo space with the seats folded and a braked towing capacity of 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg). For a vehicle that size, a highway rating of 9.2 L/100 km is a solid result on a long road trip.
